São Vicente
Because I want historic charm, and the best view in the city.
You’ll love this...
Narrow cobblestone streets, the magnificent São Vincente de Fora Monastery, and unforgettable views. It’s an historic and regal parish, fit for the city’s erstwhile kings and queens.
But you won’t love this...
Call it a hidden gem, it’s found outside the lively central spots. It’s also up one of Lisbon’s 7 hills, so be prepared to do some walking.
Will I like living here?...
São Vicente has a majestic atmosphere, perfect for those wanting to feel like a part of both Lisbon’s past and present. It’s outside the tourist hot spots, so you’ll feel a little more like a Lisboeta around here.
And if you’re bored...
Feira da Ladra: Lisbon’s legendary thieves market isn’t quite the treasure trove it once was. But it’s still well worth a look...
Who knows, you might find an original Rocket firing Boba Vett figure stashed under a pile of torn ‘80s comics held down by a 19th-century porcelain pharmacy jar full of very, very dry thyme.
Not saying you will, mind. But it’s that kind of place.
Google rating: 4.⅕ And this Google review nails it: Google review text - short and sweet if possible “A good waste of a couple of hours. Lots of junk to buy!”. So... you liked it?
Anything else?
Hungry? São Vicente is an excellent spot to sample Portuguese classics like Caldo Verde and Bacalhau a bras.
Check out O Vinhaca Tapas & Vinhos, a classic cubby hole, and a friendly local favorite. Book ahead though, there are only 5 tables.
And did you know?…
The best part about living up a hill is usually the view, and Lisbon is famous for its Miradouros (viewpoints). The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte in Graça is the city’s highest lookout and offers stunning views over Lisbon and the Tagus river.
