El Cabanyal
Because fishermen are the new hipsters.

You’ll love this...
Crack out your surfboard because summer months on the beach get wet n’ wild – swimming, windsurfing, beach volleyball, you name it – El Cabanyal has got it!

But you won’t love this...
Don’t speak Spanish? Well now’s the time to learn. Most restaurants don’t have English menus – please don’t starve.

Will I like living here?...
You will if you want to experience authentic Valencian life. ‘Cos that’s what you get here. Colourful ceramic tiles adorn streets crammed with tapas bars, pretty cafes, and humble bodegas. Vino ahoy!

So it’s not just authentic. It’s contemporary and creative, with a real sense of community. To make the most of that, try the famous La Lonja de Pescado fish market.

But you need to know this...
This is an area in need of investment. Some might say it's authentic. Others would say it's run-down. One thing's for sure, it has it's fans. Read this review from Tripadvisor:

"Every time I come to Valencia I love to go for a walk in El Cabanyal. It is a place where you feel that the time has stopped, it used to be a fishermen village. It is true that the neighborhood got neglected in the past 20 years by the local governement which is a shame but it seems that there are some efforts being done to repair it. It is quiet, with beautiful architecture of colorful tiled houses, close to the beach and some good local food.'"

And if you’re bored...
And hungry… Casa Montaña: Founded in 1836, this historic restaurant covered in barrels of wine still gives you the essence (and the taste) of ancient Valencia.

Google rating: 5/5
And this Google review nails it:
“Tapas choice excellent - sautéed baby Broad beans with ham to die for.” - Really? Would you actually DIE for it?

Anything else?
Looking for the most hipster place in town?

Get yourself down to La Fabrica de Hielo. It’s a former ice factory, converted into a cultural space.

You can see live music and attend workshops and exhibitions, and theatre performances, and reading clubs. Not to mention it has a bar and restaurant. Can we come too?

And did you know?…
El Cabanyal hosts a theatre festival called “El Festival Cabanyal Íntim”. Residents open their homes to host intimate, experimental theatre performances over 2 weekends.

Hopefully, the hosts have finished their dinner before the actors start performing in the kitchen. Otherwise… Imagine.
