San Pietro (Musei Vaticani)
Just as Pope-y as you'd hope-y!
Overview
Have you always dreamed of being neighbours with the Pope? Of course you have. And that's why San Pietro/Vaticani is the place to be.
Aside from the main attraction, it's all very residential. The streets sit in neat lego blocks. It's easier to navigate than other parts of the Eternal City.
It's well-connected. Full of restaurants and good shopping.
San Pietro/Vaticani is much more than the high seat of the Catholic World – it's heaven.
What can I do here?
Half of San Pietro/Vaticani is taken up by ... guess what?
You're right: Vatican City.
The Catholic Church is grand and omnipresent. Its spectacular churches and famous monuments attract millions of visitors every year. It's well worth joining them.
You should visit the magnificent Castel Sant'Angelo, too. It was a mausoleum for Roman emperors. And a castle. It's nearly 2000 years old and still standing tall.
Support local business: cook a feast at home! Get your ingredients at the Mercato Trionfale. It's the largest food market in Rome and just north of the Vatican.
Don't feel like cooking?
You'll find lots of restaurants and cafés nearby. They're made even more lively by the students from LUMSA University.
If you're a sandwich person, you must – MUST – check out Duecentogradi in Piazza del Risorgimento. Fresh ingredients, great beers, and even better sandwiches – this paninoteca(sandwich shop) has it all. It's one of our favourites.
Fascinating fact
Vatican City is the smallest independent state in the world. So small, in fact, that its area measures just ⅛ that of New York's Central Park. Mini.
