Flaminio
Quiet but central
Overview
You burn to escape the hard-beaten tourist paths of Rome.
But you still want to live near the city centre.
No problem.
Flaminio is just what you're looking for.
The name comes from Via Flaminia, an ancient road leading from Rome to the Adriatic. It was built in 220 BC. You could say it's holding up well.
Flaminio is north of the city centre, which is a good thing. You escape touristic Rome, but you can still walk to some of Rome's iconic sites:
It's quiet, but it has a metro station. Getting around is easy. Flaminio is ideal for just about anybody.
Why not you?
What can I do here?
Put on your comfy shoes and walk to Piazza del Popolo. It's a huge public space. You'll find an Egyptian obelisk here, raised in honour of Ramesses II.
Go into the Santa Maria del Popolo. You'll find 2 paintings by Caravaggio, one of which is the Crucifixion of St. Peter.
After that, it's off to the Spanish Steps for a little light shopping. Valentino and Gucci are both here – just a 15-minute walk from the Flaminio metro station.
Closer to home is the Ponte Milvio, an important bridge for the Roman Empire. Even closer to home are the gardens at Villa Borghese.
Tiber River is waiting, too. That's your early morning walk or run sorted.
Hungry? Remember the rule: Roman food is great, but Sicilian food is incredible. With that in mind, head to Sicilia in Bocca, Flaminio's local Sicilian restaurant. Don't forget to try a cannolo (tube-shaped pastries filled with yum).
Fun fact
During WWI, Flaminio was transformed into an industrial area for military use. It became a major manufacturer of arms and munitions.
