Sesto San Giovanni
Milan’s thriving outer shell
Overview
10km north east of Milan, Sesto San Giovanni has earned its title of “honorary city”.
After huge growth in the 20th century, it has become a happy, lively and popular mini-city.
Despite being on the very edge of Milan, Sesto houses over 70,000 people. But this wasn’t always the case. At the turn of the 20th century, it was fewer than 10,000!
So, why is it so popular?
Sesto is a great area for people who want city vibes and car rides. It is cosmopolitan but has breathing space and green areas.
In short, the perfect blend of suburb and countryside.
There is a young feel here, too. Biccoca University has student accommodation to add some vim and vigour to the area. So if you want to keep up with everyone else, bring some energy!
What can I do here?
Well, let’s start by heading west. This is where you’ll find the incredible Parco Nord. Nature at its best. We recommend sitting by the lake for sunset, and watching the reflections on the water’s surface. Bliss.
Want to get a little closer to the stars? Book a lesson at Parco Nord’s flying school and get airborne!
Sesto is a small town with a rich history. Walk the streets and enjoy the historical buildings, some of which are used as libraries and houses.
If you're in the mood for art, visit the nearby Hangar Bicocca contemporary art museum. Art in a warehouse? Breathtaking!
Like to shop? Head over to Media World and Decathlon and get spending.
When you get hungry, go to Ristorante Enoteca Morganti - seafood in every colour!
And if you’re ready for city lights and long nights, head over to Milan city centre by metro. Easy.
Fun fact
Some people affectionately refer to the district by the abbreviated name “Sesto”, which just means “sixth”. We like number names. They’re easier to remember than Saint names!
