San Donato
Industrial, natural calm.
Overview
San Donato is a quiet suburb to the south-east of Milan, away from the stress of city life.
San Donato is an industrial powerhouse yet retains a sense of tranquility. And a love of nature. If you want tree-lined streets, San Donato is the place for you.
The headquarters of ENI and SNAM – 2 of Italy’s largest oil and natural gas exploration and infrastructure companies – are based here. You should check out the ENI offices, even if you don’t work there. They’re surprisingly green and beautiful!
As with many of Milan's suburbs, San Donato prides itself on close links to the city. From here, you can take a metro to Centro in just 13 minutes. Not bad for a town 10km away!
San Donato is dominated by terraced apartment blocks in the centre of town, and a little more spaced out on the outskirts. Don't expect sprawling shopping outlets, though. San Donato isn't close enough to the action for your fix of Prada. You'll need to spread your wings for the pick of the bargains!
What can I do here?
Nobody is going to tell you San Donato is a party town, but it's not without its points of interest. Start off with a trip to Parco Tre Palle (that means "Three Balls Park"). Maybe take three balls with you, or just a few sandwiches and your favourite novel.
Or if you want to do a little more moving, Centro Sportivo Enrique Mattei has plenty of activities available, including a running track and Olympic-sized outdoor pool. Burn some calories or watch the footballers strut their stuff.
When it comes to food, San Donato is surprisingly boastful. Ai Due Orsi and Osterietta are great places to visit. Expect fresh fish, beef cooked rare, and seafood platters every colour of the rainbow. You're welcome!
Why not check out the flea market? San Donato doesn't work with Gucci, but you can certainly pick up some bargains from the locals!
Progressive fact:
San Donato is home to Italy's first ever transsexual police officer. Stefania Pecchini used to go by the name Fabio and has opened the door for other Italian workers to show their true colours with pride. Molto bene, Stefania. We're proud of you.
