San Cristoforo
Peaceful and well-connected
Overview
Sitting peacefully on the banks of the Naviglio Grande is San Cristoforo sul Naviglio.
It’s a small 13th century church, which gave its name to the not-quite-as-small neighbourhood in which it resides.
The district straddles the canal, with most of its residential area on the southern bank. Small businesses, apartment buildings, and some small office blocks. That’s about it for San Cristoforo.
It’s nothing exciting, but it offers something that’s hard to find:
Tranquility in the inner city.
What can I do here?
San Cristoforo is small and residential, but its handful of restaurants contain some real gems.
If your wallet is feeling too heavy, you can successfully lighten it at the wonderful Lume. Patrons love everything about it. The staff. The chef. The menu. The ambience. The style. Oh, and the Michelin Star of course.
And you’ve a few Euro left? Excellent. You can treat friends to some funky flavours, and tickle your own taste buds, at La Gelateria della Musica. Ice-cream and live music? How ex-ice-ting!
Sorry. We couldn’t help it.
Okay, so now you have no money left. But don’t worry! There’s free stuff to do here too!
You can’t miss the San Cristoforo church. It might not look like much from the outside, but wait until you get inside!
It’s been waiting for you for 800 years. Waiting for you to fall in love with its beautiful frescoes and stained-glass windows.
And now that you’re by the canal, you might as well make the most of it. Stroll down the bank in the evening, toward the city centre. The vibrant and trendy Navigli district is a short walk away. Time to paint the town red!
Fun fact
There’s a popular Milanese legend about the canals here. People claim that Leonardo Da Vinci is secretly their true designer. (Spoiler: he is not.)
How affordable is this neighbourhood?
