Gratosoglio
The commuter town rising from the ashes.
Overview
Ask anyone in Milan about Gratosoglio and they’ll tell you about its past.
Here’s the history lesson in brief...
In the 1960s Gratosoglio was a big part of Milan’s growth plans. Investment was huge and hopes were high. But in the 70s the town suffered from the post-war national financial crisis.
It forced residents back to the centre of Milan. Gratosoglio was left unfinished and poor. It wasn’t pretty, and the town deserved better.
But nothing lasts forever, and Italy got over its troubles.
Visit today and you will see a completely different picture. Gratosoglio is now one of Milan’s most important commuter routes.
Many working families move here for the quiet life and easy commute to work, just 45 minutes. There is a safe and working class atmosphere here, with very little ego.
Gratosoglio deserves its moment in the sun. With its sad past behind it, the future looks bright for this southern Milan suburb.
What can I do here?
Gratosoglio used to be a “dormitory neighbourhood”, meaning you only came home to sleep!
Today, that’s not the case.
If you want to admire nature, spend the day at the Parco Agricolo Sud nature reserve. Expect tree-lined cycle paths and untouched ponds. The park is also home to many wild animals, so tread carefully!
Need to buy something? Anything at all?
Go to Fiordaliso shopping centre. It’s has nearly 130 shops, including a supermarket and over 20 restaurants, cafes and bars! Spending spree.
On the weekend, take tram line 15 directly to Piazza Fontana , right in the heart of Milan, to get your fill of the city.
Hungry?
Treat yourself at Antica Osteria de Ronchettino. It’s something special, plus they also serve delicious seasonal menus depending on the time of year.
Fun fact
The origin of Gratosoglio’s name is up for debate. Some believe it comes from the Apostle San Barnaba who, when leaving the town, said “thank you” to the chair he sat on. For this reason, Gratosoglio translates as “grateful throne”!
