Dive into the history of Kings and Queens. It’s the oldest barrio (neighborhood) in Madrid, and a jewel in the crown.
But you won’t love this...
Iconic spots means the tourist flock. If you want to live this central, you’ll have to learn to share.
Will I like living here?...
It’s Madrid at its most regal – and home to the Palacio Real. It’s at its majestic best as the sun sets and the baroque cathedrals, monuments, and grand plazas cast their long shadows.
If that sounds a bit regal, worry not. It’s sophisticated, but not stuffy. Take a stroll in the manicured Palace gardens, then stop for drinks at Terraza Atena. If it’s scorching hot, they have little pools to dip your feet in. Ahhhhh, feels good.
And if you’re bored...
Teatro Real: Dating back to the early 1800s, it’s one of the great theatres in Europe and makes for a fantastic night out.
Google rating: 4.6/5
And this Google review nails it:
“One of the best guided tours ever taken.” – By anyone? Ever?!
Anything else?
Rents in Palacio can be steep. But there are 3,418 rooms in the palace. Maybe you can crash there? No AC though.
And did you know?…
The site of the Palacio Real was originally home to a Moorish Alcázar (castle). It burnt down on Christmas Eve in 1734 under suspicious circumstances. Rumour has it that the Bourbons were very keen to get started on a brand new royal residence. (cough) Insurance scam (cough). Just sayin’.
