Gaztambide
Because I want a traditional neighborhood with a strong beat.
You’ll love this...
It’s the laidback Madrid barrio, right by the campus. It’s the street life and the nightlife. It’s t-shirts and skirts at 2am on hot summer nights. It’s student friendly, but not student-ville.
But you won’t love this...
It’s certainly popular with a young crowd. The hipsters have moved in, but Madrileños still rule this roost.
Will I like living here?...
The great Gaztambide strikes a winning balance between charming residential barrio and spirited student hangout. There’s an endless selection of affordable places to eat and drink, and it’s just a 10-minute walk (or a 10-stop bar hop) to Puerta del Sol.
And if you’re bored...
Teatro de la Abadía: Catch an intimate performance at this charming little theatre.
Google rating: 4.5/5
And this Google review nails it:
“An excellent center of dramatic art in Madrid.”
Anything else?
The party is on Princesa. At the southern end of the neighborhood, around Calle Princesa, you’ll find a bar to suit your style. As Hemingway put it, “Nobody goes to bed in Madrid until they have killed the night”. You can damn well murder it in Gaztambide.
And did you know?…
If you’re a metalhead or a mosh-pit monkey, you’ve come to the right place. Where Calle de Andrés Mellado meets Calle de Meléndez Valdés, you’ll find some of the best rock bars in Madrid. For a culturally enriching punch in the face, check out a local flamenco metal band.
