Avenidas Novas
Because I want to lean like a local; late night Bifana and Prego.
You’ll love this...
Join the locals at a Cervejeria, lean at the bar, and pick your favorite meat filled sandwich. There are some lovely parks and Praças too, and one of the best museums in town.
But you won’t love this...
Understated (but perhaps underrated), it’s not a nightlife hotspot, a travel guide favorite, or a charmer like Alfama. But, you make your own fun around here and there is plenty to be had.
Will I like living here?...
It looks like... broad avenues, office blocks, and a smattering of old art nouveau mansions. You’ll find a vibrant community in the frango assado joints (grilled chicken!), local Tascas, and excellent seafood restaurants.
Students like it for its proximity to the campus, and it’s home to the Gulbenkian museum! If you visit one museum in Lisbon, make it this one. Free on Sundays ;).
And if you’re bored...
The Lisbon sandwich challenge: Pick a Cervejaria (any will do), order the 3 national sandwiches: Bifana, prego and leitão. Attempt to eat all 3.
Spotahome rating: 5/5 And this review nails it: “No one has ever completed the Spotahome Lisbon sandwich challenge. It’s impossible.”
Anything else?
Central, but not tourist central, you’ll have no problem finding a cheap meal and a beer around here. There are some affordable accommodation options around too, particularly in the northern reaches of the neighborhood.
And did you know?…
Avenidas Novas is home to the legendary Pastelaria Versailles, which is a fine spot to sample the famous pastéis de nata (egg tart).
Legend has it that the nuns, having starched their habits with egg whites, found themselves with an abundance of yolks.
And so it came to pass, thanks to God's strict dress code, a delicious eggy treat was born. Devine! Can you pick your neighbourhood based solely on the quality of pastries though? You can, and should.
