Overview
Marzahn was a rural, agricultural district up to the 1970s, when industrialized apartment blocks were built here. The population is working class, and this is not considered a desirable place to live. However, many Berliners like this district for its low rent, and insist it is just as safe and convenient as any other neighborhood.
What can I do here?
Alte Börse Marzahn, which opened in 2013, is certainly worth a visit. This converted livestock farm is now a collection of artists' studios, with a brewery, beer garden, and coffee shops. At Helle Mitte center you will also find a number of restaurants, cafes, bars, and cinemas.
Fascinating fact:
The Marzahn Harvest Festival takes place every September in the historic village of Old Marzahn, celebrating their history of agriculture and featuring produce, arts, crafts, and a parade.
