Top 5 Things to do and see in Seville

Are you planning your trip to the beautiful Andalusian capital—Seville? Or did you just get here and are still a bit lost? Spotahome would like to help you out with our top 5 things to see in Seville while you are there. So here goes!

Plaza de España

Plaza de España was built for the Ibero-American Exposition —a world fair held in Seville in 1929— it’s located just south of Seville’s historic center and right by the Maria Luisa Park. The Plaza forms a half-circle building accessible by numerous bridges representing the four ancient kingdoms of Spain. In the center is the Vicente Traver fountain. There are also tiled ornaments representing the Spanish provinces. Some scenes of Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars were filmed here. The music video of Simply Red’s song “Something Got Me Started” also contains sceneries from this picturesque plaza.

Maria Luisa Park

It is criss-crossed by multiple paths and three main avenues. Majestic fountains and statues make the park not only a magical place to visit but a kind of an open-air museum. Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, the Hermanos Quintero and Infanta María Luisa plazas stand out for being the most famous spots. At the Maria Luisa Park, you can also admire the Fountains of the Lions and the Frogs, as well as Waterlily Pools where the ducks frolic.

Real Alcázar Palace

The old Almohad fortress had to be rebuilt twice, first by Peter I, who made the Real Alcázar its residence, and then during the reign of Isabella II.

The interior of the building has two courtyards: the Las Doncellas and the Las Muñecas courtyard. Not only will you enjoy the architecture, but the decoration here is also breathtaking. A 16th-century coffered staircase gives you access to the top floor while paintings by Roelas and Madrazo will transport you to a bygone era.

Torre del oro (The Golden Tower)

Under Yusuf II al-Mustansir, the Muslims constructed what’d be their last major building in Seville. It was designed as a fortified tower to protect the port to the south of the city. Today, it’s one of Seville’s must-see spots and provides the perfect atmosphere from where you’ll be able to contemplate Guadalquivir river, Triana neighbourhood and Seville’s city center.

Catedral — La Giralda

Right in Seville’s city center La Catedral de Sevilla (The Cathedral of Seville) was built by the former mosque. Today it’s considered the third largest church and the largest Gothic building in Europe. It also has the largest altarpiece in the world.

Besides the Cathedral itself, we at Spotahome recommend to take a look at the old minaret of the mosque known as La Giralda and the Orange Tree Courtyard.

If you have already checked out our Top 5 things to see in Seville and are looking for something else to do, try the following barrios:

Barrio de Triana

A renowned Sevillian neighborhood, people as varied as sailors, bullfighters, flamenco artists and gypsies called it home. Walking around it, you’ll find Iglesia de Santa Ana; the historic Inquisition Alley; Triana Market, the Museum of Tolerance nestled in the ruins of San Jorge Castle; and the Santa Ana Pottery Factory.

Barrio de San Vicente — Restaurant: Eslava

Once you finish everything (or your tummy starts growling), it’s time to eat. Spotahome absolutely recommends Espacio Eslava. This restaurant is a must in Seville. Every time I find myself in town, I visit Eslava and order salmorejo (a typical Andalusian tomato soup made with bread, garlic, olive oil and tomato) and, my favourite, costillas (ribs), among many other incredible dishes.
