Health is wealth: Living healthily as a Student

We know that living as a student in a Spanish city is synonymous with having fun and living it up, but for once, we are going to think about having a healthier life while still having a lot of fun.

It’s no secret that unhealthy eating, excessive drinking and stress have a big part in university culture and it’s all too common for students’ health to take the back seat. Your mind and body can be your worst friend or your best friend. And seriously, most will prefer the latter! Therefore, we’ve put together our top tips for living a healthy lifestyle while at University.

#1 Food, glorious food!

  • Replace the fast food for freshly cooked food. Seek out your local market and go and buy some fresh food. It’s cheaper than fast food and supermarkets, healthier and much more satisfying.
  • Start preparing your meals in advance. This way you’ll avoid the need for a quick and convenient option like fast food. Plus, you will save money!
  • Replace the sugary drinks for water. Simple, effective and good for you. It depends on the city you are living the water will be free, or in any case, it will be cheaper than soda.

#2 Sports and Fitness

Any type of exercise provides us with endless benefits, from improving your mood and helping you get a better night’s sleep. Universities are never short on sport associations or societies to join, nor are university cities short on gyms. Not a fan of hitting the gym or getting involved in university sports? Hit the pavement either running or on a bike. Running through parks and cities is one of the most popular sports nowadays, and there also new apps for helping in this task. Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, and Valencia have no shortage of great parks all around that will make taking in the scenery while working out will be great.

Keeping active will really help you cope with all the demands on you in the classroom, so get active, and more importantly enjoy yourself!

#3 Sleep!

Hitting the sack, catching some ZZZZZ’s, getting some shut eye or just sleep. However call it, make sure you’re getting enough of. It’s easy to burn the candle at both ends and burn out. Avoid this by trying to get to sleep early most evenings. The 8-hour rule is still on!

#4 Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power!

It’s easy to neglect the mind, but your mind is what will get you your degree. Keeping your mind active is important and we don’t mean playing Candy Crash or watching Series.ly. Pick up a book, read the newspaper, or learn a new language. Stimulate your mind!

**#5 Socializing **

Socializing is one of the biggest parts of university life, and arguably one of the most important, but you being social isn’t exclusive to the bars. Alternatively, explore your neighborhood with your friends and roommates, go out for a meal (or even cook one at home), go see a movie or play, travel to a nearby city etc. The possibilities are endless.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you enjoy yourself!
