Startup: small or medium-sized company with a high technological background that starts from an innovative idea in the market, is characterised by dynamism and flexibility, and very creative professional teams. Sounds good, right? It sounds so good to us that, at Spotahome, we have been on the pitch since 2014... And you, do you work at a startup? Or would you like to work at one? Why don't you bring yourself to start a new business? Taking advantage of the fact that October is a month of film premieres, today we want to talk about movies (and a TV series) that are pure inspiration to launch a startup.

  1. The social network (2010)

We're quite sure there isn't a more popular film about the birth of a digital company, so you definitely should watch this one. Directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, The social network opens the era of biopics in the 2010s. The film recreates the birth of Facebook through its creator, Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg), in late 2003. The story of this social network is unprecedented and the movie was awarded three Oscars that year.

2. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Scorsese produced a three-hour film. And what a three-hour film it was. Di Caprio plays one of the roles of his life in this film, which tells the story of Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker who, through illegality and excesses, will learn that only with ambition can you be successful. And what does it take to make a successful startup? Ambition. Now, any entrepreneur would sign up for a much more boring life than Jordan Belfort. You already have the weekends to do this!

3. Joy (2015)

The main character is a single mother of two children who, overnight, becomes a successful entrepreneur and creator of household products. Based on the true story of Joy Mangano, the film directed by David O. Russell is not an ode to digital innovation, but to entrepreneurship. Because, regarding companies, everything starts with a good idea. And ideas are fundamental elements of success; as much as you start from scratch, a good idea will always be the starting point if you want to gain a place in the market.

4. Steve Jobs (2015)

Can you imagine creating one of the most important technology companies in history... in a garage? Well, this is not what really happened with Apple... that was more of a rumor that became a myth, but the story of the apple company was worthy of a film. Starring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet, this biopic is the one that had the best reception among all the films about Steve Jobs. Probably when Apple was born, in 1976, the concept of startup didn't exist, but what we do know firsthand is that since its foundation, technology has inspired thousands of entrepreneurs who, like Steve Jobs and Wozniak at that time, have decided to put out all the stops in their bet for the future.

5. Halt and Catch Fire (2014-2017)

Well, okay, it's not a movie, but at Spotahome we are hooked and we didn't want to miss the opportunity to talk to you about Halt and Catch Fire, one of our favorite series. This technological drama takes us back to the beginnings of modern and home computing, when computers begin to be marketed for personal use. Set between Texas and California in the 80s, Halt and Catch Fire shows all the faces of entrepreneurship: from the long hours and effort at the beginning, to the happiness of the achievement.
