Best Christmas Getaways from London - Top 10 UK Christmas Destinations

London is great. There is no doubt about it. However, sometimes you might need to get away from the big smoke and find some peace elsewhere. This is why, here at Spotahome, we've compiled a list of the Best Christmas Getaways from London.

1. Bath

One of my favourite cities in the UK and a potential rival to London itself, Bath is a beautiful destination at any time of the year. But at Christmas, I believe, it's irresistible. Read the guide to a weekend in Bath here.

2. Dorset

One of my favourite regions in the UK, I never get enough of its Jurassic Coast and the green of the grass while driving around.

Make sure to read our guide to Dorset before heading there.

3. Manchester

Just a mere two-hour train ride from London, there is a whole new world in the city of Manchester. If you fancy a break from the noise and buzz of the capital, but don't fancy the countryside, head up to Manchester. Although smaller than London, it is one of the UK's largest student cities in the UK and has a lot to see.

4. Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Shrewsbury offers a good idea of what London might have looked before the Great Fire. Birthplace of Charles Darwin, Shrewsbury is home to more than 650 listed buildings including many Tudor or Jacobean marvels. The Christmas festivities involve crafts and carols in the Quarry park as well as a Christmas market.

5. Wells, Somerset

Wells is the smallest city in England and it’s gorgeous at any time of year. In winter it becomes even more charming with its lights and a great Christmas tree.  The popular Wells Christmas Market is back for its third year and it features
over 100 traders which will fill Wells Market Place with festive stalls offering gifts, crafts, food and drinks. The perfect chance to pick up some last-minute presents.

6. The Peak District

The Peak District is one of the UK's prime holiday destinations in summer, spring, autumn and, of course, winter. Here you can immerse yourself in the Lord of the Rings landscape. The Peak District National Park is perfect for walks, hikes and rides with a touch of the old countryside that we often forget while living in London.

7. The Scottish Highlands

A Christmas train journey around the Scottish Highlands is the perfect gift for a loved one. With routes starting in Glasgow or Edinburgh, you can choose your route based on which Highland sights you'd like to see. Get ready for a show made of lochs, fields and hillsides. If you are looking for peace, the slow and relaxing train ride is perfect to unwind and take in the beautiful scenery.

8. Kent

A Christmas Carol is one of the most loved Christmas books, and heading to Rochester where Charles Dickens is buried seems suitably appropriate. The city celebrates the festive season with a Charles Dickens Festival, but that's not all - there is a grand cathedral, a castle and medieval architecture which makes it a magical Christmas destination.

9. Cornwall

Imagine reading a book while watching the sea and hearing the crashing waves. Surely crowded in summer, Cornwall is a peaceful option in winter. So, if you’re looking to escape the London crowds this season, look no further. There are gorgeous winding coastal trails and incredible sunsets over the white cliffs. If you're looking for a bit of adrenaline, you can even join the brave winter surfers who aren't scared of the freezing temperatures.

10. Staycation in London

The growing trend of taking a break from one's home couldn't be better than in London. With its fabulous hotels and plenty of choices, you only have to pick your favourite.

And you? What plans do you have for Christmas?
