1. Unlikely fact…

As possibly one of the most obscure projects in history, the plan is to replicate some of Lyon’s most famous attractions, right down to the bars, statues, restaurants, and churches…

2. Artistic fact…

What does Lyon have in common with New York? Both cities feature statues designed by the same sculptor.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who created the Statue of Liberty, also designed the Fontaine Bartholdi, which can be found in Lyon’s Place des Terreaux.

Top tip: Make sure you visit Lyon’s 21-ton fountain during winter. The water freezes around the horses, creating the dramatic impression that they are frozen in time!

3. Secret Fact…

Found mainly in Vieux Lyon and the Croix Rousse, the Traboules are hidden passageways that have witnessed many secret happenings. There are said to be 400 traboules concealed between various buildings — how many can you find during your stay?

First created in the 4th century, Traboules have been used by locals, silk weavers, and most recently the French Resistance, who used them to hide from the Gestapo. If these tunnels never existed — would Lyon have become a completely occupied city?

4. Cinematic Fact…

Did you know that Lyon was the birthplace of cinema? The Lumière Brothers created the first motion picture in 1895 and without them, it’s unlikely that the film industry would be what it is today.
