5 Most Important Places in El Born, Barcelona
El Born is a neighborhood typically beloved by many Barcelona’s locals, including our own home checker Clothilde. And why wouldn’t it be? The typical characteristics of this neighborhood are artsy, beloved by locals and a perfect nightlife spot. On top of that, it’s completely centrally based and that’s what makes it easily accessible and enjoyable for anyone. El Born is magical.
But do you know the 5 most important places in El Born?
1. Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar

The graceful looking Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is one of Barcelona’s most well-known spots and a place you’ll without a doubt get to know if you visit the El Born neighborhood. But there’s a lot more to this fascinating church – it’s almost 700 years old and it’s an outstanding example of a unique Gothic design. Its exterior is completely different from the interior – some of its decorations have survived some hard-hitting battles. If you do happen to visit, make sure you take the tour and visit the top – don’t forget to bring your camera!
2. Cathedral of Barcelona

Although the Barcelona Cathedral is slightly younger than Basilica of Santa Maria, it’s still a beloved spot in El Born. It’s a common meeting spot for plenty of walking tours and an excellent place to indulge in some people watching. The Barcelona Cathedral is simply magical – there’s no other way to describe it. You don’t even have to go in – just spend some time sitting on the steps and watch the world pass you buy. But here’s what you should know – it was built somewhere in 14th century, the roof is full of several gargoyles and Barcelona’s Dancing Egg tradition takes place here. We can’t give it all away – you just have to go see it.
3. Picasso Museum

Here’s the thing – I’m not even an art fanatic and I spent hours in the Picasso Museum. Definitely take the time for this one – it houses more than 4000 pieces of art. It opened in 1963 and consists of 5 buildings all together. The old buildings are enough of a reason to go visit the Picasso Museum, but really, it’s a must do for anyone who considers themselves an art and history fan.
4. Palau de la Música Catalana

Palau de la Musica Catalana is a modern building, built only about 100 years ago, but don’t hold that against it. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and more than half a million people attend a show every year. The building itself is very impressive, the interior features wonderful decorations and if that’s not enough, imagine it being filled with music or laughter.
5. El Born Centre Cultural i de Memòria

The first time I came into the building, I couldn’t help but admire I was able to see ancient Barcelona. You will witness the remains of the 18th century’s iconic La Ribera neighborhood – the entire exhibition is mindblowing and worthy of a visit for anyone looking to experience the old Barcelona. It is located inside the old El Born Market, one of the most important spots in the city.
